Smooth Flow is a blend of alkalizing, hydrating and soothing herbal powders that support digestive and gut health.

The combination of slippery elm, psyllium husk, marshmallow root, hibiscus, and licorice root offers powerful benefits for both gut and skin health.

Slippery elm and marshmallow root soothe and protect the digestive tract, reducing inflammation and promoting healing, while psyllium husk aids digestion by supporting regularity and feeding beneficial gut bacteria. Hibiscus enhances detoxification and liver function, which in turn supports clear, radiant skin, and licorice root helps balance hormones, reduces inflammation, and brightens the complexion

Together, these botanicals harmonize digestive and skin wellness through their anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, and soothing properties.

About the botanicals in this blend

Slippery Elm (Ulmus rubra)
Slippery elm has been traditionally used for soothing gastrointestinal discomfort due to its mucilage content, a sticky substance that coats and protects the mucous membranes. Studies show that slippery elm can be beneficial in treating conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). A 2010 study found that the mucilage in slippery elm increases intestinal motility, thereby easing constipation and other digestive complaints .

Gut inflammation, often associated with leaky gut, can lead to systemic inflammation affecting the skin. By promoting gut healing, slippery elm helps reduce inflammatory conditions that contribute to acne, eczema, and rosacea .

Psyllium Husk (Plantago ovata)
Psyllium husk is rich in soluble fiber and has been extensively studied for its role in promoting digestive health. Research shows that psyllium helps maintain healthy bowel movements, relieves constipation, and acts as a prebiotic, fostering beneficial gut bacteria . A healthy gut microbiome is crucial for skin health, as it influences systemic inflammation and toxin clearance.

Psyllium’s ability to bind and remove waste and toxins from the digestive tract can help clear up skin conditions like acne by preventing toxin overload in the body. A 2020 study confirmed that psyllium supplementation helps reduce inflammation markers linked to systemic skin conditions .

Marshmallow Root (Althaea officinalis)
Like slippery elm, marshmallow root contains mucilage that helps protect and soothe the gastrointestinal tract. Studies support its use for conditions like gastritis and ulcers, where it helps reduce inflammation and promote healing . A 2014 review of botanical therapies for the digestive system highlighted the protective effect of marshmallow root on the gut lining .

Marshmallow root also benefits the skin by acting as an anti-inflammatory agent. A 2013 study demonstrated its ability to reduce redness and irritation when applied topically, making it a valuable tool for calming sensitive or inflamed skin .

Hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa)
Rich in antioxidants, hibiscus has been shown to support liver function and detoxification, which are critical for clear skin . The liver plays a crucial role in processing toxins, and an overburdened liver can lead to breakouts, dull skin, and premature aging.

A 2015 study found that hibiscus extract contains compounds with liver-protective and antioxidant properties, which help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation . Moreover, hibiscus is a natural source of alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), which promote skin exfoliation, leading to a brighter, more even complexion .

Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza glabra)
Licorice root is known for its anti-inflammatory and cortisol-modulating effects. Research supports its use in managing gastric ulcers and acid reflux by protecting the stomach lining and reducing inflammation . A 2018 study found that licorice root can help balance cortisol levels, which in turn reduces stress-induced inflammation—a common trigger for skin issues such as acne and rosacea .
